I'm redesigning a portion of my shop. In the back of the shop, I have dedicated a section to making biodiesel. I never planned on it that way, I figured I could do other things along with making biodiesel back there, but after I got started, I quickly found that making biodiesel is a messy process and there is no way around it. The process has a few manual steps that have become a lot harder for me with my back giving me fits. The current change revolves around how we move grease into the biodiesel reactor. Right now, I have a couple of 55 gallon drums that hold the grease before it is moved into the reactor and I move the grease in via a drum pump. The pump needs to be turned around 500 times to get the 37.5 gallons put into the reactor and I'm finding that difficult and it leaves me in pain and needing a break. But with technology being how it is, I can have an easier way. I currently use a Harbor Freight clear water pump to circulate the grease in the reactor. So I have decided to use another one to move the grease from the barrels into the reactor. To do that, I'll need a hole at the bottom of the barrels so the pump doesn't have to pump from the bottom and then push it into the reactor, but rather it can get the grease coming out of the bottom and pump it into the reactor. To do that, I need a hole in the bottom of the barrel that can be closed off. So I purchased a couple of 1" ball valves, some 1" black pipe and I'm getting ready to plumb all of that together. To make it easier on me so I don't have to bend over all the time to just load the processor, I'm also building a stand that can hold the barrels full of grease. And since I'm already violating the barrels to attach the ball valves, I've decided to put a heater into each of them so Winter operation is made easier. I'll try to take a photo when its done.
