The tractor is together...then apart...

*SIGH*

I'm sick of the tractor. You are probably sick of hearing about the tractor! But I'm working on it daily, and it's on my mind, so I'm talking about it.

There I am with a come along on each side of the tractor slowly tightening it up to bring it back together. I get within three inches or so and nothing. It rocks, but won't go all the way back together. So I head over to the old farmer in my neighborhood who restores old tractors and knows everything.

He lets me know that since it is a two-stage clutch I have to align the splines for both of the clutches rather than just one of them. Okay, that makes sense...back to the tractor, resplit it (not hard since it really isn't together) and I align both clutches with the splines on the shaft.

Okay, a come along on both sides pulling it together...a little lift with the lever to get the twist right and no it does not go...now only one inch seperates the halves, but it is not budging.

Thankfully a buddy of mine who is a mechanic called right about then. After talking for a bit I asked him his thoughts. Here's my problem...I have a pilot bearing, then the transmission clutch then the PTO clutch all needing to be aligned before I get this thing back together.

Split the tractor again...this is getting a lot easier and look at it. Without an alignment tool, I don't have a chance. Finally, something fun! So I grabbed a bit of hex 12L14 stock I have in the shop, put it in my lathe and began turning a special tool to align the bearing and splines of the clutch. This is the funnest part of the process...well, making the new bolt was fun as well, but I'm enjoying this.

The saga continues...I'm making the tool, but not done yet, and I need to crash tonight so I'm ready for tomorrow. I get to preach tomorrow on Proverbs 7 and then we have a connection lunch so I will be exhausted after tomorrow...some time in the shop finishing this tool will be the relaxation I need after tomorrow. I'll post a picture once I have it done.
